For the first exercise of the course I studied the shadows of my building using two instruments: the camera and the program Vasari. The building is located at the intersection of Via Eugenio Barsanti and Via Giovanni Volpato , between the bridge of the Trastevere Station and Marconi Avenue . Therefore it is an area composed mainly buildings of 6 or 8 floors .
Framework of the project area
Through Vasari I built a model containing the volume of the building under consideration and the volume of the surrounding buildings . So I began to see how shadows change produced by the buildings during the day using the " sun path", like this picture shows.
Vasary's model
To verify that the results obtained with Vasari correspond to reality , I took photos to the building with a camera , but also with Vasari, in order to obtain the same views with the same shadows, the same day and at the same time . The result of this work was a series of images from which I can guess the movement of the sun , but also the effects that the shadows of the buildings generate on other buildings and roads .

We note that the entire west facade is shaded, while the south is partly covered by the building to its side and partly exposed to the sun. In addition, we also note that the road is entirely shaded . With the passage hours to the west and south facades will always be more enlightened . My home is on the fourth floor of the building . At this time it is not illuminated but late in the morning , in the kitchen , which is open to the south, I can enjoy a good light , as the rising sun illuminates the increasingly facade.

This photo shows the effect of the presence of a building next door that covers for most of the studied building .

The west facade is completely sunny and in the south it is almost entirely, except for the bottom which is covered by the building on the other side of E. Barsanti avenue. In these times of the day even the road is quite sunny, except a part of this, due to the shadow made by the building in front ,a single block so high on that side of the road. While the kitchen is located to the south, and it enjoys a good light for most of the day , my room is open to west. Having the desk under the window , in the afternoon , especially when the sun goes down, it is almost impossible work on the desk with the window open and without shields that protect from direct sunlight .

The west facade completely sunny.

04:52 pm
The sun is setting , hiding behind the big building in front of the one that I studied . The upper part is still illuminated , while the lower part, including all G. Volpato avenue, is in shadow . At this hour who has a window to the west, can not to use a shield against the sun , which becomes weaker.
In conclusion, the south facade is the most enlightened in the day , so it is also the one that enjoys the most comfort given by the light and heat of the sun.
