The studied area is located in Viale di Villa Pamphili, in Monteverde Vecchio district (Rm). The analysis of the shadows refers to the building in Viale di Villa Pamphili 61. This building is an irregular volume and it is composed by six floor and has a garden on the ground floor, at the street level. The shadow analysis deals with the study of the west front in different moments of the day. The pictures were taken in the day March 15, 2014 at strategic times : at 8.30 a.m. , 1.00 p.m., and then at 6.00 p.m. In the morning, at 8.30 a.m., we can see that the analyzed front is completely shaded because the sun shines on the opposite side of the building. At 1.00 p.m. the sun is high in the sky, so the west side of the building is hit by the sun, but the body of the building that sticks out reflects his shadow on the body behind. So the left part of the front appears more shaded than the right one, that is mostly lighted. At 18.00 the building at the other side of the street reflects his shadow on the west front that appears lighted only in his upper part. Moreover In the garden at the street level there is a tall pine tree which reflects his profile on the building, but his shadow gets confused by the others. The tall pine create a shadow on the building when it is hit by the sun, after 13.00 p.m. I have noticed that many shadows are caused by the irregoular shape of the building which project on his face the shadows, moreover during the afternoon, when the sun is going down.
My flat is located at the sixth, and last, floor of the analyzed building. This is an advantage because it is always very bright, also in winter, but it is also a disadvantage because during the summer it’s really hot. The bedrooms and the living room are directed to south-east, so during the morning in winter they receive a good lighting, but during the summer the bedrooms collects too many light and also become too warm. This fact is also caused by the great windows which don’t have thermal protection. The dining room is directed to south so it is always bright both in winter and in summer, in every hour of the day. The service areas kitchen and bathrooms, which don’t need a particular light, are directed to north-west and overlook on the little courtyard. That’s why In the summer the service area are less warm then the other rooms, because don’t receive directly sun light, but are shaded by the other part of the building at the opposite side of the courtyard. I studied how the light change from the inside of my apartment, particularly in my bedroom and in the living room, and I took some pictures at two different times during the day at 10.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.
My bedroom is directed to south-east so looking the picture, we can see that during the morning the room is more illuminated than the afternoon.
The living room instead is directed to south so it is always illuminated both in the morning and in the afternoon.
