Sustainability concept applied

In today’s world respect for the environment means designing buildings that do not use an indiscriminate amount of energy, albeit produced by renewable sources. In fact, the production of solar energy and the use of high efficiency systems are not enough to offset the waste produced during the entire lifespan of today’s buildings.

Med in Italy house is inspired by the traditions of the southern Mediterranean and its material culture, yet within the framework of modern-day dialectics. Using an innovative style and advanced building methods, we focus on new scenarios of environmental sustainability concepts to optimize local climatic and material resources. In order to create a comfortable indoor temperature and air quality in accordance with current standards we however have to resort to a hybrid building which combines active systems for the production of clean solar energy for lighting, heating and domestic hot water with thermal inertia. This means designing a building with “mass” and a largely passive function. The Med in Italy sustainability concept concerns two features related to our two points: passive and eco-conscious:

1.   the HVAC provides the high comfort performances required by the Solar Decathlon Europe’ contests, but for a large period of the year the house, thanks to its passive behavior, could well function without switching them on. The passive behavior consists in a mix of past tradition behavior and contemporary solutions, such as for example the insulating thick layer;

2.   the materials have a low level of primary energy embodied. We made a deep research not only on the material already marketable, but also asking and developing special materials with our sponsoring contractors.
