Summer School „Advanced Digital Architectural Design“
in Detmold, Germany, July 18-31 2010
Subject: Towards a New Mobility
Digital Media in Architecture has manifold implications on different levels of the architectural process.
Computational design strategies and digital fabrication methods lead to a significant acceleration in
the generation and production of Architecture. In addition we can state that the frontiers between the
physical and virtual space became more permeable - in both directions. Virtual Reality has an
increasing impact on our perception, not only since the success of the Internet. The influence of
audiovisual technology has already been described by Paul Virilio in his book “The Aesthetics of
Disappearance” from the 1980s, where introduced his concept of "motion without mobility."
Even though Vitruvius includes mobile war machines, clocks, waterworks and other moving
constructions in his treatises as well as building, architecture has traditionally been understood as an
art of space - not of time - and indeed as the very image of stability. Yet the possibility of incorporating
change and motion in architecture has fascinated architects since the Modern Movement - if not earlier
- and reflects an age-old longing to find an architectural expression in step with the most advanced
developments of the times.
Digital Design tools extend and amplify the range of possibilities for new concepts of mobility like
never before in Architecture. Ranging from metaphorical translations of motion into aerodynamic forms
of the dynamisation of both the design process and its results through time-based CAAD techniques
and new geometries.
During the first decade of the Millennium major car manufacturers, like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz,
Porsche and BMW built breathtaking museums to worship their brand. The architects developed
prestigious projects, which respond to the fetish of mobility with an architecture of motion. Nowadays
the automobile industry seems to be beyond its peak. For sure mobility is still one of the major
challenges of our future. But what is the new mobility of our information society? How can architecture
be involved and contribute to new ideas and solutions? What is the role of the architect within this
process?
Against this background the Summer School tries to find concepts for a new mobility, which involve
different perspectives from the generation to the production and perception of architecture and mobility
- in the physical as well as in the virtual world.
