2_Es Lab_6-Analysis of solar radiation-Viale di Villa Pamphili 20-Virginia Pucello

Second Exercise

Object of study of the second exercise is the analysis of solar radiation, and how it acts on the building in question. I decided to consider the summer and the winter period, comparing the two periods in an interval of time between sunrise and sunset. Another element to consider is the effect that the building, with solar radiation, results on the ground on which it is resting.

Process

the procedure was as follows: first, I created a new rectangular base, for buildings, with creat mass; the second step was to add to my building elements that I think can affect the solar radiation, such as windows and terraces: I set my reference plane, on which I have to make these additions, setting the Modify reference plane-Plane -> Set, and then I used alternately the command creat form (to add an extruded element to the building) and void form (for "empty" mass which constitutes the terraces and openings of windows); finished volumes, I selected finish mass. The next step was the analysis of solar radiation: Analyze-> Solar Radiation-> Sun Study->Multy-daySummer / Winter Solar Study, I set the date of the summer / winter time, Sunrise to Sunset-> Cumulative, kWh/m2, Solar radiation default, and I selected the masses to be analyzed.

Considerations

It’s curious to observe how protruding elements and surrounding buildings affect the solar radiation, especially in the summer. In fact, during the summer, the protrusion significantly reduces the contribution of sun on the windows, unlike solar contribution during the winter. This means that during the winter, the angle of incidence of the sun relative to the earth, is less than in summer, and the projections don’t obstruct the light. The analysis shows also that the north facades are always in the shade, in every season. This can lead to degradation.
