According to the third exercise we studied the shadows and the solar radiation of our buildings. The area is located in Terni, expecially in the suburbs of this city. It’s famous for the steel industries and agriculture ‘cause it’s basically surrounded by arable lands. The professor requires us to create buildings with a yard that could become/be a square. These buildings had to have 80 apartments and they have to host groups of families of four or three, singles, couples and students. Our area is surrounded by a school (north), a PEEP site (piano di edilizia economica popolare)(east) and the Matteotti residential area. The last two are buildings characterized by a down market price of apartments. That is another one of the aims that we have to reach. Now I’ll focus on our project.
THE PROJECT
Here I’ll explain the project with few words but necessary to understand the images.
We decided to create a yard that is, as the same time, a square so not only the inhabitants of the site can use it but also people of the surrounding area. The buildings that overlook the area are simple rectangle that are aligned with the shape of the lot. They’re linked with curved roof under which we’ll place the stairs and elevator. Each building will have three floors: the low ground has its access directly from the street, the apartments of first and second floor are served by a gallery.
SHADOW ANALYSIS
For the analysis of shadows we took two days that are opposites: 21st of June and 21st of December. We analyze also two different moments of the day: 10.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m.
21st of June= 10.00 a.m.
Following the shape of lot the walls towards south-east and south take a lot of light and
Warm. The rest of walls are shaded and have less light. The angle roof makes a place in which
People can rest.

Fig.2 10:00 a.m. of 21st of June. North-west view
2.00 a.m.
The situation is reversed because this time the south-west and north sides absorbe the light
But it’s still a weaker light than the morning one. The roof remains an obscured zone.

Conclusions: on summer the favourite side is the south-west cause it receive the most quantity of light but it’s not a huge dose that heat too much. The place under the roof could be good for the people who live in the buildings that faces toward south-east.
21st of December= 10.00 a.m.
South west side is completely enlighted while the rest is covered while the spaces under
The linking roofs receive light.

2.00 p.m.
The situation is not so different from 10.00 a.m. but the spaces under the roof are
Covered.

Fig.8 2:00 p.m of 21st of December. North view
Conclusions: The north and north east side is unadvantaged cause the light is almost unpresent.
SOLAR RADIATION
Both in summer and winter the south/south east has the best advantages. But there’s one thing that we can notice right now: on winter, the orange colour is well distributed in the south/soth-west instead of summer that has a clear separation between the yellow of the roof, the red of the heated walls and the blue of cool walls. So in summer there are more temperature’s differences. In both of the season the north side is purple.
