“Med in Italy” is a play on words that brings together the uniquely Italian origin and the richness of Mediterranean culture of the innovative and ecologically sustainable house which will take part in Solar Decathlon 2012 along with 19 other international firms. The project, promoted by the the Spanish government, has taken place five times before and aims at organising a competition for solar powered and eco-friendly house designs.
Environmental, economic and social sustainability are fundamental to this project: environmental because of the need to construct a building making best use of resources in terms of materials and climate. Economic because the costs of acquisition, transport and energy will be lowered - re-usable natural materials with low environmental impact will be used. Social because this project is aimed at improving disadvantaged sites.
The Med in Italy team, comprising lecturers in Architecture, Economics and Engineering at Rome 3 University and a small Industrial Design team from La Sapienza University in Rome and supported by active contributions from students, intends to design a house with roots in Southern Mediterranean tradition and material culture while continuing a meaningful debate with the contemporary.
The prototypes will be exhibited in Madrid in summer 2012 where they will be subjected to 10 tests - the decathlon: Architecture; building methods; energy efficiency; electrical consumption; internal comfort; functionality; communications; economic up-scaling; innovation; sustainability.
